What is the role of radiation after pancreatic cancer surgery? Please join us for the June 2015 #radonc journal club when we discuss:

Multi-institutional pooled analysis on adjuvant chemoradiation in pancreatic cancer

This retrospective study of almost 1000 patients with pancreatic cancer treated in three countries analyzed the correlation of treatment-related and tumor-related factors with overall survival. The published data have been mixed, but NCCN guidelines in 2015 favor adjuvant chemoradiation. There are have been debates on the value of radiation after pancreatic surgery. Why? What does this study reveal about the role of radiation therapy?

Follow one of the authors, Dr. Joseph Herman of Johns Hopkins Hospital.  Dr. Mike Chuong from University of Maryland will also be joining us to discuss, and anyone from #pancsm, a pancreatic cancer Twitter community, is welcome to join us.

We start asynchronous discussion Friday June 19th  6 AM Central Standard Time through Sunday June 21st 9PM , with the live hour 8-9 PM Central Standard Time.

Here are the topics we’ll be covering:

T1: What is the controversy over using radiation therapy after pancreatic cancer surgery?

T2: What were the aim and design of this study?

T2b: How did authors from 3 countries choose to collaborate and pool their data?

T3a: What factors correlated with overall survival, and were there other interesting findings?

T3b: What are the strengths and limitations of this study?

T4: NCCN currently supports use of adjuvant chemoradiation. What are future directions for continued research?

Thanks to Katherine Bennett and the IJROBP, the article is free, open access for journal club starting Tuesday June 16th. Here is the link to the article.

We look forward to seeing you this coming weekend!
